The Sideshow of the Absurd

Cincinnati Cleeko, The Captive Swan Boy is based on the specific history of Cliko, a captive bushman who was put on display with a traveling sideshow in the early 20th century. The sculpture evolved from a cover story in National Geographic about the lost Indus civilization, which also inspired his swan headdress. Cleeko, named for his speech pattern, stands proudly, though he's dressed in a native skirt, and chained to an old mining cart. The piece rotates to the sound of drums and the ballyhoo of a snake barker.

The headress might confirm such theories, if only its secrets could be unlocked… Why, for example, did the unicorn vanish as a symbol after the civilization's collapse?…" (from National Geographic).
