Made in Italy, Roman Collages 2003

This group of new collages was made while being a Visiting Artist at the Academy in Rome, Rome, Italy, winter 2003. The original project was called "Digital Diaries and Traveling Sketchbooks". The idea was to use digital media, onsite drawings, and portable printers to retain new experiences and produce work while traveling. These complimentary tools help to digest and distill images, sounds, colors and architecture specific to that environment.

Interested in the psychology of interaction between the ancient culture of Rome and the activity of the modern population, I collected torn fragments of advertisement from many of the city's bill boards and posters. These posters are constantly ripped, glued over and replaced with new ones. In the studio, I would then incorporate these layered fragments with water colors and drawings of ancient statues, frescoes and mosaic that I visited and photographed.
