Artist Statement - August 2002
Role
Play Series 2002
| We all have various roles to play. The American heritage Dictionary of the English Language defines role-playing as: | |
| "1. Psychology. A therapeutic technique, designed to reduce the conflict inherent in various social situations, in which participants act out particular behavioral roles in order to expand their awareness of differing point of view." | |
| This new series of work combines my interests in culture, digital media, photography, and the integration of painting with collage and imagery with abstraction. The subject varies from true-to-life people to fictional characters in movies, often captured with strange facial expressions and gestures. I am interested in the removal and retrieval of identity and information. The process of photographing television personalities is important as a way to take information and to place it with a new situation. I remove more information by physically cutting out parts and replacing it with paint or collage. Each piece is then mounted on canvas and photographed with color print film and a 35mm camera. The color negative is then enlarged, with the final C-print measuring 20" x 24" or 30" x 40". My intention is the ensuing conflict between the materials and the narrative. |
